SIGNAGE CATEGORIES
Regulated signage in Portugal is essential for ensuring safety, organisation, and guidance in any public or private space. In accordance with national and European legislation, safety signage follows standardised rules, with specific colours and shapes, allowing for quick identification and understanding by any user.
The main categories of signage are:
-
Prohibition Signage – indicates forbidden behaviours, such as “No smoking” or “No entry”.
-
Mandatory Signage – indicates mandatory actions, such as “Mandatory use of helmet” or other personal protective equipment.
-
Hazard/Warning Signage – alerts to risk situations, such as “Electrical hazard” or “Flammable materials”.
-
Emergency and Rescue Signage – identifies emergency exits, evacuation routes, and first aid locations.
-
Fire Fighting Signage – indicates the location of fire extinguishers, hoses, and other fire fighting equipment.
Emergency signage and fire fighting signage are particularly important in companies, industries, schools, and public spaces, as they ensure rapid responses in case of an accident.
In Portugal, all health and safety at work signage is regulated by Decree-Law no. 141/95, which transposes European Directive 92/58/EEC, and is complemented by Portuguese Standards (NP).
If you are looking to install normative signage in Portugal, these categories help comply with legislation, protect people and property, and ensure maximum effectiveness in visual communication.
